The terms forestry mulching and land clearing are oftentimes used interchangeably. This is due to the fact that forestry mulching is a type of land clearing. However, in reality their processes and outcomes are quite different.
What is Forestry Mulching?
Forestry mulching involves using a specialized machine that grinds small trees and shrubs in mulch on-site. The resulting mulch and grass clippings are spread across the ground and serve as a protective layer. Forestry mulching reduces the need for excessive machinery such as bulldozers, excavators etc. that are necessary during traditional land clearing. It uses a single machine to cut, grind and clear vegetation, while turning saplings and brush into mulch.

When Are They Used?
Traditional land clearing is typically done when preparing for construction, agriculture, or other development projects. Forestry mulching, on the other hand, is used for wildlife habitat restoration, erosion control, or when preparing land for new vegetation.
Forestry mulching is not always an option. If you have a heavily wooded area with large trees more traditional land clearing methods may be necessary. Forestry mulching can also not be performed if there are large rocks that may damage the mulcher.
Efficiency
Forestry mulching is much more cost effective. Traditional land clearing involves permanently removing trees, bushes and their roots. This requires multiple pieces of heavy equipment as well as a great amount of man power. However, depending on the capacity of the forestry mulcher that is used, it can clear up to 15 acres of vegetation a day. This will of course be affected by factors such as the type of terrain as well as the density and type of material it is clearing. Not only is it more efficient in terms of the time it will take to complete the job, but it also reduces costs of labor and fuel.
Sustainability
Forestry mulching is a more sustainable option. Traditional land clearing may use chemicals or even explosive blasts. It can also increase the risk of erosion whereas forestry mulching leaves the structure of the soil intact. The mulch that is left behind will decompose and create a barrier preventing future erosion, as well as return nutrients to the soil. Grass will also be able to grow naturally through the mulch. Selective clearing is also much more easily accomplished with forestry mulching. You will have more control over the area that you are clearing and you will be able to preserve native vegetation.
Which Method is Right For You?
If your land is a heavily forested area with many mature trees and you are looking to have everything removed then traditional land clearing may be the only option. However, if the land is overgrown with vegetation, brush and saplings then forestry mulching will be the cheaper, more efficient and environmentally friendly option for you.
